Morrill, Bergstrom and Bates Earn 1st Team All-LEC Honors
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. 5/15/12 – Keene State College seniors Kyle Morrill (Auburn, N.H.) and Erik Bergstrom (Enfield, Conn.), and junior Greg Bates (Salem, N.H.) were honored by the Little East Conference on Tuesday, earning First Team All-LEC honors as voted on by the league's coaches.
Morrill, leads the conference in hitting, totaling 66 hits in 153 at-bats for a .431 average on the season. The Auburn, N.H. native also has four homers with 44 RBI's, and is 13-for-15 in stolen base attempts. The speedy centerfielder had his best games against regional rivals Babson College (3/28), Westfield State (4/12) and Curry College (4/24) where he totaled four hits in all of those contests.
Bergstrom goes into this week's NCAA Regional tournament fourth in the conference in hitting, with a .401 batting average, and leads the LEC in RBI's with 54, with 20 of those run-scoring hits coming in conference games. The Enfield, Conn. product had a season-high five RBI's against Salve Regina (4/1), and went 4-for-5 against regional rival Williams College with three RBI's, three runs and two stolen bases.
Bates who batted at the top of the lineup all season, leads the Little East Conference in runs scored and broke the KSC school record with 63 runs in 44 games for the Owls. Also getting it done at the plate, Bates has a .364 average with 27 RBI's and 67 hits. The Salem, N.H. native did most of his damage versus LEC teams in the regular season, batting .433 (26-of-60) in the 14 game conference slate, with a .507 on-base percentage and swiping six bases in seven attempts.
Also earning All-LEC honors, senior Jeff Pelkey (Fitzwilliam, N.H.) earned 2nd team all-conference honors.
The Owls return to action on Wednesday, as they will head to Eastern Conn. State University for the NCAA Regional opener against Western New England University.
