Owl (M&W) Capture KSC Invitational
'KEENE, N.H. 9/30/06 - Running on their home course in ideal conditions, Owl men's and women's cross country teams posted victories at the 12th Annual Keene State College Invitational on Saturday.
The Owl men placed five runners in the top-10 to edge Southern Maine 35-33 to claim their 10th KSC Invitational championship. Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt.) of Southern Maine won the individual title with a time of 26:03 over the five mile course.
Kevin Kelleher (Rocky Hill, Conn.)was the first Owl runner to the finish line. He placed third in a time of 26:35. Four Owls finished in succession; Patrick Davis (Wethersfield, Conn.) was sixth (27:03), Jared Samuel (Londonderry, N.H.) took seventh (27:16), Jason Garrity (Topsfield, Mass.) was eighth (27:20), and Brock Welch (Merrimack, N.H.) finished in ninth place (27:29).
Breanne Lucey (Keene, N.H.) breezed to the individual title to lead the Owl women to their first KSC title since 2003. Lucey posted a time of 17:59 to beat teammate Jennifer Adams (Saratoga Springs, N.Y. / 18:27) by 28 seconds.
Lucey said she was unfamiliar with the course." I didn't have an idea what to expect. I don't run the course and when I was warming up I got lost," said Lucey, who played soccer for the women's soccer team in the afternoon. But it's flat and I excel on flat courses. The race felt great. I kept a consistent pace and had some energy at the end."
Lucey said the race was a good warm-up for the soccer game. "Usually after I run and got right into a game I have my better games," she said. I'm pumped."
Other top finishers for KSC include: Stephanie Westcott (Bellows Falls, Vt.) (5th/19:18). Sophie Holly (Ledyard, Conn.) (6th/19:49), and Rita Marcotte (Heath, Mass.)(11th/20:21).
Coach Peter Thomas was pleased with the performance of his women's team. "It was a great race for the women," Thomas said. "It was a good steeping stone for us, especially the freshmen runners."
He wasn't happy with his men's team. "They didn't run up to their capabilities," Thomas said. "Fortunately, it's September. We have a ways to go."
