Little East Conference Honors Five Owls

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. 9/28/09 - The Little East Conference honored five Keene State College athletes on Monday for their play this past week.

Women's Soccer

Defensive Player of the Week
Jacyln Grant (Newington, Conn.), Senior, Back, Keene State College

Grant anchored a Keene State defense that allowed a 1.0 goals against average in a pair of Owls' victories. The Newington, Conn. product and her defensive mates limited Eastern Connecticut to just seven shots in a 2-1 overtime victory on Sept. 26. Earlier in the week, Keene State shutdown Clark University (Mass.) in a 4-1 non-conference win. Grant also contributed to the offensive rush against the Cougars, netting her second marker of the campaign.

Goalkeeper of the Week
Megan Dempsey (East Weymouth, Mass.), Sophomore, Keene State College

Dempsey posted a 0.92 goals against average and a .818 save percentage to backstop Keene State to a 2-0 week.  On Sept. 26, she made five stops, including a diving save in the final minutes of regulation, to give the Owls an opportunity to defeat conference rival Eastern Connecticut in overtime, 2-1.  She posted four saves at Clark University (Mass.) earlier in the week.

Field Hockey

Goalkeeper of the Week
Vikki Stoessel (Derry, N.H.) Senior, Keene State College

Stoessel posted a 1.00 goals against average and a .900 save percentage for Keene State this week.  The Derry, N.H. native made a season-high 16 saves in a 2-0 loss to No. 10 Trinity (Conn.) on Wednesday.  On Saturday, Stoessel was able to make the Owls' only goal stand up, making a pair of save to shut out Bridgewater State for a 1-0 conference win.  

 

Men's Soccer

Defensive Player of the Week
Nathan Gaughan (Harwinton, Conn.) Senior, Back, Keene State College

Gaughan and the Owls' stifling defense held opponents to just one goal in a pair of wins this past week.  Keene State posted its fourth shutout of the season against Worcester State, holding the Lancers to just one shot on net. On Sept. 26, the Owls upset Little East rival No. 13 Eastern Connecticut to raise their conference record to 2-0.  

Rookie of the Week
Shawn Shand (Keene, N.H.) Freshman, Forward, Keene State College

Shand led Keene State to a 4-1 conference victory over No. 13 Eastern Connecticut on Sept. 26. The freshman striker from Keene, N.H. registered a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the 51st minute.
