Jack Fabian, Ph.D., begins his sixth season as head coach of the Keene State College swimming and diving program. Under the direction of Fabian and his hard-working staff, the Owls had enough highlights to fill the pool at Spaulding Gym.

The women's teams won five LEC titles, claimed the 2008, 2009, 2010 NEISDA championships.ast year they broke 22 of the 23 school records. The team had  swimmers qualify and compete in the NCAA championship in 2008, 2009, and 2010.  Last year 5 women competed in the NCAA championship meet and all five returned with All-America honors.

The men’s team won their first ever New England championship in 2009 and went on to win again in 2010.  The team placed a strong second at the ECAC Division III meet, and established 12 new team records.  For the first time in over thirty years, the men’s team had a swimmer qualify and compete at the NCAA championship meet.  Despite KSC's numerous accomplishments in the pool, Fabian feels the program has just scratched the surface of its potential.

Outside of college swimming, he has gained a great deal of experience working with elite nationally ranked swimmers as part of his involvement with the Greenwood Memorial Swim Club and USA swimming. The swimmers in Fabian's training group of Greenwood Memorial swim club have earned numerous Top-16  national times and have qualified and competed in USA Swimming's Junior and Senior National competitions.

Outside of college swimming, Fabian, has been the personal coach of an open water swimmer on the USA National team since 2007, and has been a member of the USA Swimming National team Coaching staff.  His national team athlete qualified and competed in the 10K and 25K open water events in the 2009 World Championships in Rome, Italy and in the summer of 2010, competed in the 5K and 10K open water events at the World Championships in Roberval Canada.  It was at World Championships in 2010 that  his athlete won the 5K at World Championships and became the World Champion in this event.  In August of 2010, she competed at the Pan Pacific Championships in California and won a silver medal in the 10K.  He has traveled with the USA National team athletes to FINA open water World Cup events in the UAE, China, Hong Kong, Argentina, Chile and the Cayman Islands. 

Fabian has had the opportunity to attend National Team coaching conferences and to train elite swimmers at altitude for the past three years at the Olympic Training center in Colorado Springs. By working with swimmers at the Olympic training center he has gained insight from working side by side with the best coaches in the nation.  He has brought his experience from working as a part of the National team coaching staff back to Keene State to develop swimmers to their physiological potential by incorporating cutting edge stroke mechanics, training and teaching.

Fabian is currently the open water coordinator for New England Swimming. Fabian, who also runs a master's swim program at KSC, graduated from Hobart College in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and earned a doctorate in molecular biology in 1992 from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He obtained his post-doctoral training at the National Cancer Institute and worked as an assistant professor at Penn State and as an adjunct professor at Keene State.

Fabian, along with his wife Claire and children Max and Eva, reside in Keene.

            Dan Morse is returning to Keene State College as an assistant swim coach. A former four-year year swimmer for the Owls, Morse fills a spot on Head Coach Jack Fabian’s staff that became open when Katie Allenson left to become assistant softball coach at Pfeiffer University in Charlotte, North Carolina.

            “I’m real happy to be back with the Keene State swim team,” said Morse.  “I’m very familiar with Jack’s system and know the program inside and out.  I know we’ll work well together.”

            “Dan was a hard-working, dedicated swimmer for Keene State and he’ll bring those same traits to his coaching position,” said Fabian.  “Dan is going to make a great coach because he has the personality for it.  We’re excited to have him.” 

            A native of Hope, R.I., Morse brings plenty of swimming experience to his new position.  Swimming since the age of five, Morse competed at the Kent County YMCA and on the highly-successful Bishop Hendricken (R.I.) High School team that has captured 23 state titles.  A top competitor for the Hawks in the 200 and 500-yd. races, Morse earned second-team all-state honors as a senior. 

            Morse, who graduated from Keene State in 2011, earned a pool full of honors swimming for the Owls.   He was a member of the Owls’ three-time champion 800 free relay team at the NEISDA championships and also captured individual titles in the 200, 500, 1,000 and 1,650 free races. 

            A one-time holder of Keene State records in the 1,000, 1,650 and the 800 free relay, Morse posted an NCAA ‘B’ cut in the mile, coming up just a few spots short of qualifying for the national championship meet. 

            During his four years competing, KSC posted a 27-5 dual meet mark (never losing a home meet) and won three consecutive NEISDA championships from 2009-11. 

            Morse spent the past year helping to coach his YMCA team and serving as a volunteer coach at Bishop Hendricken.  “I wanted to get a lot of experience and look to get into coaching,” Morse said.  “I never thought it would happen so quickly and I’d end up back at Keene State.” 

            Looking for a cross-training sport to go along with his swimming, Morse took up boxing as a freshman and plans on implementing several of his workouts in the Owls’ dry land training. 

A former head coach of the KSC swim program, David Mason returned to the Spaulding Gym Pool deck as the Owls' diving coach in 2006.

Mason, who spent eight seasons coaching the Owls (1987 - 1996), helped KSC build a successful dual meet record and qualify an increasing number of athletes for the New England championships during his tenure.

Originally from Erie, Pa., Mason attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where as a springboard diver he qualified for national competition in his final two seasons.

While working toward his master's degree at IUP, Mason began coaching the school's diving team. Upon graduation, he served as the swim coach at several high schools in Pennsylvania and New York, as well as the diving coach at Mercyhurst College.

Mason currently works in the physical education department at Monadnock Regional High School, where he also served on the football coaching staff for eight seasons. Mason resides in Swanzey, N.H., with his daughters Kylie and Maura.
