Keene State College Captures Commissioner’s Cup With Balanced Attack

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MASS. 6/19/13 Keene State College captured its unprecedented 13th consecutive Little East Commissioner’s Cup after the conference office released the final standings for the 2012-2013 academic year this afternoon.  The Owls finished in the top-third of the Little East regular season standings in 13 of their 17 (.765) conference sponsored sports  with an average of 6.294 points to earn the trophy in each of the 13 years it has been presented.

The University of Southern Maine matched the program’s best placement in the annual standings with an average of 5.778 points to edge Eastern Connecticut State University (5.7353) for the second position.  Rhode Island College averaged 5.0 points to post the No. 4 ranking in the eight-team standings.

The Commissioner’s Cup measures an institution's overall performance in the 19 sports sponsored by the Little East Conference. For sports in which the conference conducts in-season play (baseball, basketball, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball), point totals are determined by the order of finish in the final regular season standings with bonus points awarded to the champion of the ensuing postseason conference championship tournament. For sports that do not conduct in-season play (cross country, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, and swimming and diving), points are awarded based on the order of finish in the conference championship meet.

Under the leadership of John Ratliff, Keene State College captured three conference championships during the 2012-2013 academic year.  For the ninth time in program history, the Owls swept the men’s and women’s cross country titles.  The Keene State women’s swimming and diving team powered its way to the program’s seventh straight Little East Championship with a meet record 630 points.  The Owls also captured the 2013 New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Championships for the fifth time in program history.

“The fact that we were able to win the award this year demonstrates the consistency across the board of our athletic program,” said Ratliff. “We value all of our programs and want them all to be successful.   Despite not winning many team titles in the conference, we were still able to have a successful season within the Little East with everyone accumulating positive points that allowed us to win the award this year.”

Individually, senior Janel Haggerty (Guilford, Conn.) established a new program record in the pentathlon (3,467 points) to win the 2013 NCAA Division III Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championship in Naperville, Ill.  Classmate Maggie Fitter (Branford, Conn.) earned a berth in three national championship fields, capturing All-America honors in the 800-meter run at the indoor meet.  Junior Ryan Widzgowski (Camden, Maine) raced to a pair of All-America certificates this past year, standing atop the awards podium in the mile (indoor, 4:07.86) and 1,500-meter run (outdoor, 3:48.59).  Freshman Mariah Crisp (Greenland, N.H.) was named to the 2013 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III All-New England, first-team in addition to her Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Rookie of the Year Award. The Little East honored 12 Owls’ during its major awards program, including three men’s lacrosse recipients.

University of Massachusetts Boston (4.9000), University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (4.8421), Western Connecticut State University (4.5000), and Plymouth State University (4.2083) completed the annual Commissioner Cup standings, respectively.

Formed in 1986, the Little East serves as New England's premier athletic conference for public institutions in NCAA Division III.  Featuring 19 championship sports, the Little East sponsors quality competition in every season for our student athletes.  Our eight state colleges and universities dedicate themselves to an ongoing fulfillment of the Division III mission of passion, responsibility, sportsmanship, and citizenship.
