Baseball Win Streak Snapped With 7-5 Loss To Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I.--The Keene State College baseball team had its four game win streak ended with a 7-5 loss at Roger Williams University on Thursday afternoon.

  • Keene State: 8-5
  • Roger Williams: 3-8

How it Happened

In the first inning, Hawk starter Sam Bennett allowed a one-out walk to Nate Rossi but was able to get out of the inning with a 4-3 double play. In RWU's at-bat, Danny Roth and Dean DePreta kicked off the inning with back-to-back walks. Justin Stone moved them up a base with a groundout to second and Chris Bosco brought in Roth with the same putout.

The following inning saw Brandon Jenkins and Tyler Cedeno reach on a walk and a single. Roth later hit a grounder to short, but a poorly thrown ball to first allowed Jenkins to score from second, putting RWU up 2-0. Bosco added to the lead with a two-RBI single to right that just dropped in front of the right fielder, allowing Cedeno and Roth to score and give RWU a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Rossi led off by reaching second after a misplayed fly ball in right field. After a groundout to first moved him over, he scored on a wild pitch to the backstop, putting the first run on the board for Keene State.

The Hawks grabbed that run back in the bottom of the fifth. Anthony Dominguez led off the inning with a single to left. Jenkins stepped up next and launched an RBI double to the gap in left center, bringing home Dominguez. Then with the infield in, Bryan Goodwin pushed a single down the right field line past the first baseman to score Jenkins.

Keene State made a run in the top of the sixth. After Tom Meucci and John Tarascio got on to begin the inning, Devin Springfield and Connor Walsh brought them in with one-out singles. Connor Longleyblooped a two-out single to left to score Springfield and pull the Owls within two. Keene State added one more run before the end of the inning when Walsh came in on dropped ball in the outfield, cutting the deficit to 6-5.

In the eighth inning, Keene State's Abe Grainger put a scare into the Hawks in his at-bat, sending a deep shot to left field, but left fielder Eddy Jackson made a leaping catch to deny him the hit.

John Tarascio was 2-for-5 for Keene State.  Shawn O'Donnell (0-3) started and struck out two in 1.2 innings of work.  Jake Morris came on in relief and struck out four in 3.2 innings.  Tyler Fitzgerald tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and Connor Johnson pitched a perfect ninth.
