PAWTUCKET, R.I. - For the second time this season, junior guard Ty Nichols and freshman center James Anozie of the Keene State men's basketball program swept the Little East Conference (LEC) weekly accolades, as the duo was recognized for their efforts in two victories over the past week, the conference office announced today.
Nichols, from Springfield, Mass., garnered Player of the Week honors for the third consecutive week and fourth time overall this season. Nichols was exceptional in back to back league wins for the Owls, as the junior guard averaged 26.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game, while shooting 57.7 percent from the field, 36.4 percent from behind the arc, and 94.7 percent from the charity stripe. In a win over Plymouth State, the junior guard notched 25 points, nine rebounds and five assists, before tallying 27 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field, and adding seven rebounds with six assists in a victory over Southern Maine. Nichols has scored 25 points or more in four of the last five contests for Keene State.
Anozie, a native of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., continued his impressive rookie campaign by averaging a double double of 14.5 points and 10.0 rebounds, while shooting 85.7 percent from the field, earning Rookie of the Week honors for the fourth time this season. In a dominating victory over Plymouth State, the freshman center pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds and chipped in 14 points for his fourth double double of the season. In a close 77-74 win over Southern Maine, Anozie tallied 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting with two blocks and four rebounds.
Keene State will aim to extend its winning streak when the Owls host No. 10 Middlebury tomorrow night, January 30th at Spaulding Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
