Salem, MA -- The Keene State Owls raced out to a 9-0 first quarter lead and cruised to a 19-10 Little East Conference victory over the Salem State Vikings at Alumni Field on Saturday evening. It was the final regular season match for both teams.
Keene State finished the regular season 12-2 and a perfect 7-0 in conference play to earn the top seed in the upcoming post-season tournament. Winners of nine straight games, KSC will host a semifnal tournament game on Thursday (3:30 p.m.) Salem State finishes the year 6-9, and 1-6 in the Little East.
Griffin Meehan (Avon, CT) was the story of the night. The junior, who was third in the league in goals per game, scored seven times and had three assist for a ten-point game. Meehan scored five goals in the first period as Keene State jumped out a nine-goal lead. Matt Schairer (Wrentham, MA) added five goals as the two players combined for nine straight scores in the first half before Matt Pardee (Gloucester, MA) finally got the Vikings on the board to make the score 11-1. Ryan Savini (Wilmington, MA) added two goals in the second period, including one with 1:10 remaining to make the score 15-4 before the half.
Taylor Jette (Simsbury, CT) had a hat-trick as the Owls pulled their starters after halftime and coasted to the win in the second half. Keene State out-shot Salem State 55-26 and won 19-of-32 faceoffs.
Brandon Cali (Leominster, MA) finished with a hat-trick for the Vikings scoring with 1:00 left to make the final 19-10.
Jason Lesser (Brewster, NY), who picked up the victory in goal for Keene State, had 10 saves. Brendan Gill (Chelmsford, MA) made 21 saves for the Vikings, who have dropped five straight matches.
