TROY, N.Y.--Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute outscored Keene State College 6-2 in the second half en route to a 10-6 non-conference win on Saturday afternoon at the East Campus Stadium.
The Engineers (1-1) scored seven seconds into the game when Breanainn McNeally (Severna Park, Md.) netted off a feed from Liam Menning (Summit, N.J.) , and made it 2-0 on Patrick Finn's (North Easton, Mass.) goal at the 8:26 mark. KSC (1-1) got on the board with 2:04 left in the opening stanza courtesy of Tyler McKelvie's (Acton, Mass.) sixth goal of the season, an unassisted tally.
It was the Owls who started the second period the stronger, as Bryan Rotatori (Grafton, Mass.) leveled the scored with 12:10 on the clock, and after McNeally set up Matt Hall to put RPI back up 3-2, Tyler Reilly (Grafton, Mass.) and McKelvie responded with goals 2:30 apart as KSC took a 4-3 lead.
RPI did level things just before the break, as Finn scored his second of the game with one second remaining in the first half. The Engineers then began to pull away in the second half, as Hall scored twice and McNeally once in a 3-0 third quarter, and McNeally netted his third of the game 50 seconds into the fourth quarter for an 8-4 lead.
The teams then traded goals down the stretch, as Reilly scored at 11:01, countered by RPI's Matt Hall at 10:19. McKelvie's goal at 5:06 pulled KSC within 9-6, but the Owls could not get closer, and John Phillips (Oswego, N.Y.) sealed the win for RPI with a goal with 55 seconds remaining.
Alex Sharp (Winchester, Mass.) made 10 saves in the KSC net, while RPI counterpart Alex Castronovo (Garden City, N.Y.) made 15, as the Owls were outshot 42-33.
Keene State will be on the road again in their next game, heading to Bowdoin College for a 7 p.m. start on Tuesday, March 4. RPI hosts Wesleyan (Conn.) on March 5, at 4 p.m.
