BRUNSWICK, Maine -- A slow start ultimately doomed the Keene State College Owls on the road Tuesday evening as they fell to Bowdoin College 13-7.
The Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team jumped to a 7-1 lead and held off a late push by Keene State.
The Polar Bears move to 2-0 on the season with the win while the Owls drop to 1-2 with their second straight loss.
Conor O'Toole scored three goals to lead the Polar Bears. Defender Mac Caputi scored a career-high two goals and an assist in the win while Peter Reuter also pitched in a pair of scores.
Ryan Hart netted his second hat-trick of the season for Keene State. Tyler Reilly had a goal and an assist while Tyler McKelvie added a pair of scores to bring his season total to 10.
Bowdoin rolled off the first four goals of the game, covering a span of 4:54 in the opening quarter to grab the early lead. The Polar Bears added to their advantage with a 3-0 second quarter, taking a 7-1 edge into intermission. Six different players accounted for Bowdoin's seven first-half goals.
The Owls were able to claw back into the game thanks to a pair of man-up goals from Reilly in the third quarter, and closed to within 10-7 on a McKelvie goal with 8:11 remaining.
Several late penalties by Keene State allowed the Polar Bears to put the game away late. O'Toole, Will Wise and Reuter all notched man-up goals in the final seven minutes to seal the victory for Bowdoin.
Connor Laughlin made nine saves in the win. Alex Sharp got the start for Keene State, allowing four goals on five shots over the first 10:05 before giving way Jack Rogers, who stopped seven shots and permitted nine goals over the final 49:55.
The Owls were out-shot in the game by a margin of 50-21, but held the Polar Bears to just 30% on man-up situations.
Keene State will host Tufts on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
Bowdoin will host Amherst in its next outing on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
