KEENE, N.H. - The Keene State College women's basketball team limited Anna Maria College to 12 points in the first half on their way to posting a 62-48 season-opening win in Friday's session of the Zero Gravity Tip-Off Tournament at Spaulding Gymnasium.
- Keene State: 1-0
- Anna Maria: 0-1
How It Happened
Samira Sangare paced the Owls in her KSC debut, scoring 12 points to go along with four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Lilly Shlimon added ten points and seven rebounds off the bench, while Kenzie Bennett and Hien Thach each scored nine points. Sienna (13) and Sierra Johnson (12) combined for 25 of Anna Maria's 48 points.
It took a while for either offense to get going, but triples from Thach and Shlimon in quick succession had the Owls up 10-5 with 4:16 remaining in the first quarter. The Amcats got a three of their own to get back within two, but KSC got a Jasmin Mitchell trey and a Shlimon layup to score the final five points of the quarter to go up 15-8. The Owls continued to pull away in the second frame, as layups from Bennett and Mitchell made it a 21-10 game with 6:13 left until the break. Anna Maria only scored four more points in the rest of the half, and two free throws and an inside bucket from Sangare made it 27-12 at the 2:36 mark. A buzzer-beating layup following a steal for McPadden made it a 19-point lead (31-12) at halftime.
The Owls nursed a double-digit lead for the entirety of the second half despite Anna Maria shooting over 50 percent in the third quarter. Two early buckets from Sangare sandwiched around one from Tamra Gonyea gave KSC a game-high 37-14 lead not even three minutes in. A Bennett layup still had the lead at 23, and her triple at the 4:14 mark squelched any momentum for the Amcats, putting Keene State back up 42-23. Down 21, Anna Maria attempted to get back into the game with a 10-2 burst, but a Shlimon three at the third quarter buzzer made it 49-34 after three. The Owls were never threatened in the fourth, as two buckets from Abby Thut and one from Thach made it 55-37 with 6:45 to go. After trailing 59-39, the Amcats scored nine of the last 12 points to set the final margin.
