' PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Top-seeded Plymouth State
College advanced to its second straight Little East Conference
Women's Lacrosse Championship game by disposing of fourth-seeded
Keene State College, 17-2, Saturday afternoon at Arold Field.
The Panthers, 10-3 overall, will host second-seeded Eastern
Connecticut State University Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Arold
Field. ECSU, 8-4, advanced to the final with a 16-15 overtime
victory over Western Connecticut on Friday.
Plymouth State used a balanced offensive attack to defeat the
Owls. Four different players scored goals to stake the
Panthers to a 4-0 lead 11 minutes into the first half, and six
different players found the scoring column as PSC led 11-0 at the
half. PSC, which defeated Keene State 16-7 earlier this
season, coasted home in the second half to capture its fifth
straight victory.
Senior Julie Shields (Whitby, Ont.), junior Katie Sheridan (West
Sayville, N.Y.), sophomore Annmarie Guglielmo (Gansevoort, N.Y.)
and freshmen Bethany Brown (Norwich, Conn.) and Lilly Silva
(Lowell, Mass.) all scored three goals for PSC, with Sheridan
collecting two assists and Shields and Brown adding one assist
apiece. Other scorers for the Panthers included junior
Michelle Norton (Sandwich, Mass.) with a goal and an assist, senior
Beth Dooly (Goffstown, N.H.) with one goal, and senior Melissa
Cotton (Osterville, Mass.) with a team-high three assists.
Freshman Kristal Lundegaard (Babylon, N.Y.) scored both
second-half goals for Keene State, with freshman Colleen Murphy
(Mansfield, Mass.) picking up an assist.
PSC netminder Carmen Villanueva (East Schodack, N.Y.) made 11
saves to pick up the win, while KSC goalies Jamie Litch (Addison,
Vt.) and Mandy Gray (Sharon, Mass.) made five and four saves,
respectively.
Plymouth State's meeting Sunday against ECSU is the second
encounter between the two schools this season, with PSC taking the
first one, 13-9 on Apr. 12 in Willimantic, Conn. The teams
also met three times last season, with PSC winning during the
regular season and in the LEC Championship game and ECSU taking the
ECAC New England title game.
