W. Lax: Owl Goalie Mandy Gray Saves the Day

'WELLINGTON, FLA. 03/14/05 - Junior goalie Mandy Gray (Sharon, Mass.) finished with a career-high 17 saves, including a last-second stop, to secure the Keene State College women's lacrosse teams' dramatic 10-9 come-from-behind victory over Vassar College on Monday in Wellington, Fla.

With 1.3 seconds left to play in the game, Vassar had a chance to tie it up 10-all with a free-position shot taken by junior Kristen Hogan (Ellicott City, Md.).  However, a stop by KSC's Gray spoiled the attempt and gave the Owls the victory.

"Mandy had an unbelievable day in goal," said KSC Coach Emily Johnson.

Trailing 6-0 midway through the first half, Michelle Mason (Fairport, N.Y.), Kristal Lundegaard (Babylon, N.Y.), and Lauren Saunders (Fremont, N.H.) punched in three single goals each to bring the Owls within three (6-3) going into the break.

"We started out very slow," said Johnson.  "Once we played our game, we performed very well.  They turned it on and worked together in the second half."

The Owls went into the second half on fire, netting seven goals and holding the Brewers to three.  Lundeegard scored the eventual game-winner with 10 seconds remaining on a run play behind the goal.  She had three goals and an assist on the day.

Mason had four goals and two assists to lead KSC.  Saunders chipped in with two goals, and freshman Lanaya Nelson (Chester, Conn.) netted her first collegiate goal in the win.   Alex Manzin (Avon, Conn.), Genna Florkowski (East Northport, N.Y.), Merrill Simone (West Hartford, Conn.), and Nelson each added an assist.

Hogan and freshman Christine Castellan (Media, Pa.) each tallied three goals to lead Vassar.  Freshman Ariel Nelson (Greenlawn, NY) finished with 13 saves.

Keene State (1-1) will have two days off before facing a Franklin and Marshall team ranked 17th in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association (IWLCA) poll on Thursday.
