W.Lax: Owls Edged by Western Connecticut

'DANBURY, CT 04/16/05 - The WestConn women's lacrosse team won its second game of the season and in the Little East Conference to Keene State, 12-11 at the Westside Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon.

    

 

WestConn, now 2-8 on the season but more importantly 2-2 in the conference, took the lead early as Casey Wolff (West Islip, NY) scored two of the Colonials three goals to make the score 3-2 with 13:47 to go in the half.

    

 

Keene State, which dropped to 5-4 on the year, turned it on later in the first half, scoring five of the last six goals going into intermission led by Michelle Mazzotta (Cromwell, CT) and Michelle Mason (Fairport, NY) with two goals apiece to give the Owls a comfortable 7-4 lead to end the half.

    

 

The second half, however was a different story as the Colonials came out on fire, scoring five of the first six goals, led by Ellie Champagne (Newtown, CT) who had a career day with seven goals, scoring three of them in a matter of 1:40 to tie the game at eight with 19:38 to go. She now has 14 goals on the year.

    

 

Tatum Lakowsky (Uncasville, CT) scored her first goal of the season to give Western their first lead of the second half, 9-8.

    

 

Another goal by Mazzotta at the 13:46 mark tied the game up once again at nine apiece.

    

 

After that, it was all Champagne as she scored two more goals in under a minute to grab the lead once again, making the score 11-9. Junior midfielder, Catilin Everin (Glastonbury, CT), scored her fifth goal of the season for the Colonials off an assist from Champagne to extend their margin to three (12-9) with 3:26. 

KSC rallied with goals from Lanaya Nelson (Chester, Conn.) at the 1:02 mark and Mazzotta with 38 seconds remaining to bring the Owls within one (12-11), but they could not come up with the equalizer. 

    

 

Melissa Perry (Danbury, CT/Danbury) had 15 saves for the Colonials while Mandy Gray (Sharon, MA) had eight saves for the Owls.

    

 

Keene State will host Colby-Sawyer College on Tuesday (4 p.m.) at Owl Athletic Complex.
