WLax: Owls Fall to 7th Ranked SUNY-Cortland

'WELLINGTON, FLA. 03/17/06 - The Keene State College women's lacrosse team wrapped up its spring week trip with a 14-1 loss to seventh-ranked SUNY-Cortland on Friday morning in Wellington, Fla.

The Owls, who posted a 0-3 record in Florida, are now 0-4 overall.  SUNY-Cortland improves to 2-0.

Despite a winless spring week, KSC head coach Emily Johnson is encouraged by the team's progress.  "We've accomplished a lot down here," Johnson said.  "The team played really well, and now we'll go back home, work on some areas, and prepare for the remainder of our schedule."

Leading 1-0 on an early goal by Lauren Saunders (Fremont, N.H.), KSC was able to hold the Red Dragons scoreless for the first 12 minutes of play.  Cortland responded by netting eight unanswered goals to go into the break with an 8-1 advantage.

The Owls were outscored 6-0 in the second half as the Red Dragons cruised to the victory.

Jamie Cotton (Newton, Mass.) collected seven groundballs, while freshman Jen Gearing (Westfield, Mass.) stopped 11 shots in goal for Keene State.

KSC returns to its north schedule at Springfield College on Thursday (7 p.m.).
