W. Lax: Owls Hold Off Huskies 9-6

'GORHAM, Maine  --  Junior Stephanie Georgevits (Concord, N.H.) had three goals in the first half to lead the Keene State College Owls to a 9-6 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's college lacrosse game Saturday afternoon at Hodgdon Field.

The game was the regular season finale for both teams.  The Owls finish the season 7-9 overall and 4-2 in conference play.  The Huskies, who dropped their second straight, finished 5-9 overall and 2-4 in the conference.  Keene State has won the last six games between the two teams dating back to April 2003.

Georgevits scored twice and sophomore Andrea Mitchell (Bow, N.H.) once in the first six minutes to give the Owls an early 3-0 lead.

Southern Maine cut the deficit to two goals on five occasions in the first half, but never got closer as the teams traded goals.  The Huskies were within two, 7-5, when junior Ashley Dyer (Harrison, Maine/Oxford Hills) scored with 1:50 left in the half.  Senior Kristal Lundegaard (Babylon, N.Y.) restored the Owls' three-goal lead 27 seconds later and the visitors went to the break up 8-5.

KSC senior Colleen Murphy (Mansfield, Mass.) and USM junior Virginia Flood (Acton, Maine/Wells) had the only goals in the second half.

Lundegaard and Murphy finished with two goals for the Owls.  Lundegaard and senior Alexandra Manzin (Avon, Conn.) were credited with two assists.

Dyer and Flood each scored three goals for the Huskies.  Dyer also had two assists.

Senior goalie Mandy Gray (Sharon, Mass.) had eight saves for the Owls.  Sophomore Katie Quartuccio (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Millbrook School) had 11 saves for the Huskies.

Both teams will play in a first round LEC playoff game on Tuesday.  Tournament pairings will be announced by the conference office after all of Saturday's are finished.
