'PROVIDENCE, RI 4/8/06 -Keene State outscored Rhode Island
College, 7-1, in the final 8:39 of regulation to defeat the
Anchorwomen, 13-8, in Little East Conference women's lacrosse
action on Saturday afternoon in Providence.
RIC opened up a 5-1 lead just seven minutes into the game, but
the Owls came back to cut the Anchorwomen's lead to 7-6 at the
half.
KSC senior attack Kristal Lundegaard (Babylon, NY) netted the
equalizer with 8:39 remaining in the game. After RIC sophomore
midfielder Melissa Reggio (Commack, NY) put RIC up with 5:41 left,
the floodgates opened as the Owls scored six times in the final
4:20 to win the contest. Lundegaard finished the game with four
goals and two assists for six points. Senior attack Colleen Murphy
(Mansfield, MA) netted four goals to go along with an assist.
Senior midfielder Alexandra Manzin (Avon, CT) had three goals to
round out the top Owls' scorers. Freshman goalkeeper Jen Gearing
(Westfield, MA) made four saves to earn her first collegiate
victory (1-1).
RIC was bidding for its first LEC win since the 2002
season, a span of 23 games. KSC has defeated RIC in all its six
meetings. Junior center Caitlin Gavin (Portsmouth, RI) had four
goals and two assists for six points. Reggio had two goals, while
sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Culbertson (North Kingstown, RI) made
15 saves in a losing effort (2-8).
Winners of four straight, Keene State improves to 4-5 overall
and 2-0 in the Little East. RIC falls to 2-8 overall and 0-2 in the
LEC. The Owls travel to Colby College on Sunday (1 p.m.) RIC will
host Worcester State College on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
