'KEENE, N.H. 3/28/07 - Senior midfielder Steph Georgevits's
(Concord, N.H.) goal at the 1:05 mark of overtime lifted the Keene
State College women's lacrosse team to its first win of the season,
a 10-9 victory over New England College at Owl Athletic Complex on
Wednesday afternoon.
Georgevits took a behind the net pass from Michelle Mazzotta
(Cromwell, Conn.)and beat NEC goalie Jen Carboni (Canton, Conn.)
for the game-winner.
"It was a great feed," said Georgevits, who finished the game
with three goals. "I just tried to fire the ball on net.
Fortunately, it went in."
The victory gave KSC Coach Michelle Mason her first win of her
career. "I couldn't ask for a better way to get my first win," said
Mason. "So many people stepped up today."
After scoring the goal, Georgevits sealed the win for the Owls
when she made a key interception after the Pilgrims gained
possession of the ball following the face-off. "We worked too
hard for our first win. I wasn't going to let them score,"
Georgevits said.
KSC freshman Dene Tully sent the game into overtime when she
bounced a shot past Carboni to tie the game at 8-8 with 1:35 to
play.
Both teams traded goals in the first three minute OT
session. After Gerogevits put the Owls up 9-8, Mikaila
Sinclair (Marblehead, Mass.) scored for the NEC with 13 seconds to
go.
Carboni, who finished the game with 18 saves, made a couple of
outstanding stops for NEC in the second three-minute session,
before Georgevits found the back of the net.
Lanaya Nelson (Chester, Conn.) and Tully had three goals each
for KSC (1-2).
Sinclair had five goals to lead New England College (0-3).
Jen Gearing (Westfield, Mass.) had seven saves for the Owls.
Keene State open ups its LEC schedule at UMass-Dartmouth (1
p.m.) on Saturday.
