'KEENE, N.H. 4/26/07 - Lanaya Nelson (Chester, Conn.) and
Samantha Martella (Dixhills, N.Y.) scored two goals each to lead
Keene State College to a 10-7 Little East Conference women's
lacrosse victory over Southern Maine at Owl Athletic Complex on
Saturday.
Keene State (7-5, 4-2 LEC) will enter the Little East Tournament
with a two game winning streak. The third seeded Owls will
find out its LEC first-round opponent on Sunbday when R.I. College
plays Southern Maine. The loser will come to Keene on Tuesday.
Southern Maine (5-7, 1-4 LEC), the fifth seed will face
fourth seed UMass-Dartmouth in its first-round game.
Keene State took a 4-3 halftime lead on Nelson's second goal of
the game. Martella gave the Owls a 5-3 lead less than a
minute into the second half, before the Huskies erupted for three
straight goals. Caitlin Albert (Scarborough, Me.) put
USM up 6-5 when she came from behind the net to beat Owl
goalie Jen Gearing (Westfield, Mass.). Andrea Mitchell (Bow,
N.H.) tied the game less than a minute later when she walked in and
beat USM goalie Katie Quartuccio (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.).
Following the face-off, Lauren Cooper scored as KSC regained the
lead 7-6. Dene Tully (Peabody, Mass.) and Martella added goals to
make it 9-6.
Mitchell finished the game with a goal and three assists for the
Owls.
Virginia Flood (Acton, Me.) had two goals and an assist to lead
USM.
Gearing made 14 saves for KSC. Quartuccio stopped 16 shots
for USM.
