KEENE,
N.H. 5/7/08 - Freshmen attack players Jenny Lillis
(West Islip, N.Y.) and Lauren Sawyer (Westbrook,
Me.) netted four goals each to lead fourth seed Keene State to a
22-13 victory over fifth seed Norwich University in a quarterfinal
ECAC New England Women's Lacrosse tournament game played at Owl
Athletic Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
With the victory, Keene State (13-7) ties the program record for
wins set 2004. The Owls will face top seed Bridgewater State
College (14-4) in a semifinal game on Saturday (12 p.m.). BSC
will host the final two rounds of the tournament.
The Owls scored the last five goals of the first half to take an
11-6 lead into the locker room. Sawyer scored two of the
goals, one on a free position shot and another after stealing the
ball in front of the Cadet's net.
"We all tried to work hard because this was the last game the
seniors would be playing on the field," said Sawyer, who also had
five assists. "This is an awesome team and we just want to
continue to play."
Freshman Missy Luzzi (Oakland, N.J.) scored just
10 seconds into the second half for the Owls. After a run by
Norwich cut the lead to 15-10, KSC scored five unanswered goals to
go up 20-10. Lillis had the final two goals of the run,
giving her 52 for the season. Freshman attack Jill
Kirk (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) had three goals giving
her 58 on the season.
Once we get rolling, teams can't keep us with us," said KSC Coach
Michelle Mason. "We play up to the
competition, so I think we can give Bridgewater a good game."
Sophomore midfielder Ally Daniels (Concord, N.H.) had five goals
for Norwich, which completes its season with an 11-5 record.
KSC junior goalie Jen Gearing (Westfield, Mass.)
finished the game with 12 saves. Freshmen Kellie Pickel
(Montpelier, Vt.), who had seven saves, and Erin McGaffigan, who
stopped five shots, each played a half in goal for the Cadets.
