KEENE, N.H. 4/2/09 - The Keene State women's lacrosse team
netted three unanswered goals in overtime to post a 17-14
non-conference win over Curry College at Owl Athletic Complex on
Thursday.
The victory snapped a three game losing streak for Keene State
(3-6). Curry College (6-4) saw its two game winning streak
come to an end.
Sophomore Kelly Champagne (Wolfeboro, N.H.) scored from a
difficult angle to give Curry a 14:13 lead at the 4:46 mark of the
second half.
After KSC senior goalie Jen Gearing (Westfield,
Mass.) stopped a point-blank shot from senior Nikki MacKay
(Framingham, Mass.), the Owls were able to gain possession.
Taking a lead pass from sophomore Jamie Albert
(Southington, Conn.), junior Dene Tully (Peabody,
Mass.) scored with 34 second to play to make it a 14-14 game.
Gearing stopped a free position shot from junior Ashley Hansbury
(Chelmsford, Mass.) with 12 seconds to go sending the game into
overtime. ""She was going up top and I was able to get it," said
Gearing, who set the KSC record (22) for wins by a goalie.
"Once I made the save, I knew we were going to overtime."
Cutting toward the net, Albert scored the game winner at the
1:47 mark of overtime. "We worked real hard all game and
deserve this win," said Albert. "It always feels good to make
the shot at the end when you need it."
Freshman Samantha Benson (Hampstead, N.H.)
slipped a block and scored to make it 16-14 and sophomore
Lauren Sawyer (Westbrook, N.H.) closed out the
scoring with a goal at the buzzer.
Sophomore Missy Luzzi (Oakland, N.J.) and
Sawyer finished the game with three goals each. Sawyer also
had four assists. Freshman Caitlyn Corace
(Mahopac, N.Y.), sophomore Jill Kirk (Port
Jefferson Station, N.Y.), Benson and Albert each had two
goals.
Hansbury led the Colonels with six goals and one assist, junior
Rachel Robichaud (Billerica, Mass.) had three goals and MacKay
chipped in with three assists.
Gearing finished the game with 13 saves for the Owls.
Junior Kerri Shaw (Arlington, Mass.) started in goal for Curry and
made seven saves. Sophomore Maria Lynch (Billerica, Mass.)
took over in the second half and was not credited with a save.
Both teams return to action on Saturday, Keene State hosts R.I.
College and Curry College is at Nichols College.
