FITCHBURG, Mass. 4/3/11 – The Keene State
College men's and women's track and field teams opened
up their 2011 outdoor season with strong performances at the Jim
Sheehan Memorial Invitational at Fitchburg State on Sunday. The
women's team finished in second place with 122 points, while
the men finished in fourth tallying 89 points.
Taking home the lone first place finish for the women, junior
Keeley Moffitt (Guilford, Conn.) won the hammer
throw with a toss of 38.15 meters
(125'-02''). Also in the field events
freshman Kristen Huckins (Westmoreland, N.H.) took
second place in the javelin throw with a toss of 36.76 meters
(120'-7'').
Sophomore Janel Haggerty (Guilford, Conn.) took
second place in the high jump and long jump. In the high jump,
Haggerty leapt over the bar at 1.58 meters
(5'-2.25'') while jumping out to 4.86 meters
(15'-11.5'') in the long jump.
Joining Haggerty with a pair of second place finishes, senior
Amy Knoblock (Plymouth, Mass.) took second in the
800 and 1500 meter races. Knoblock raced to a time of 2:23.55 in
the 800 and then crossed the finish line in 4:46.17 in the
1500.
UMass Lowell edged the women for the team championship scoring
124 points to beat the Owls by two.
Earning first place in the javelin throw sophomore Glenn
Guilmette (Kensington, N.H.) won the event with a toss of
56.35 meters (184'-10''). Also in the field
events sophomore shot-putter Dante Hill (Longmeadow,
Mass.) finished second place with a throw of 14.23 meters
(46'-8.25'').
On the track, junior Kevin Hoyt (Newtown,
Conn.) won the 5,000 meter race in a time of 16:20.13. The
Owls also won the 4 x 800 meter relay with the team of
Corey Loonan (Sandwich, Mass.), Ryan
Widzgowski (Camden, Maine), Eric Macknight
(Newtown, Conn.) and Andrew Sears (Derry,
N.H.) with a time of 8:24.29.
UMass Lowell won the men's title with 166 points.
The Owls return to action Saturday at the UMass Lowell
Invitation.
