The junior from Camden, Maine raced to a third place finish in the 1,500-meter event at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, posting a personal best time of 3:48.59.
Widzgowski also earned All-America honors with his second place performance in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field championships back in March.
Dan Sullivan, a junior from Wisconsin-Stevens Point, won the 1,500 race with a Roger Harring Stadium record time of 3:46.19. Jordan Schilit, a senior from Haverford (Pa.) College placed second with a time of 3:47. 16.
"I had my usual pre-race jitters, but once I got to the line I was focused and had a good game plan that I was able to execute," said Widzgowski. "I didn't feel 100 percent, but wanted to give it my best."
"Ryan ran a good race," said KSC Coach Peter Thomas. "He was able to improve his position every lap and then hold on to finish third."
Sitting in fifth position during the early portion of the race, Widzgowski made his move, advancing to third with 300-meters to go. Staying on the back of the leaders as they accelerated down the back stretch, Widzgowski was able to hold on to his position as he crossed the finish line.
"I didn't want to separate too far from the leaders, so I worked my way back as the race progressed, Widzgowski said. "On the final lap, I just tried to hold on and finish strong."
"It was a learning experience and hopefully I will use it to my advantage next year," Widzgowski added.
Thomas was pleased that Widzgowski was able to get though the season, which included cross country and indoor track, healthy. "I've been a little fragile the past two years, so I was happy to get through this season without any major setbacks," said Widzgowski. "It's been a long year, but all the work has been worth it. "
Widzgowski becomes the 32nd KSC men's track athlete to earn All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. KSC has now produced a combined 49 men's and women's outdoor track All-Americas.
