Owls Comeback Bid Falls Short Against Bridgewater State

KEENE, N.H. - Kaitlin Nolan and Liz Robinson each notched four goals, but the Keene State College women's lacrosse team could not complete its comback bid as KSC dropped a 16-14 decision to Bridgewater State on Tuesday afternoon at Owl Stadium.

With the setback, Keene State falls to 1-9 on the season. The victory moves Bridgewater State to 4-4.

Continuing an impressive rookie campaign, Robinson added three draw controls and two ground balls to her four point performance, while Nolan recorded four draw controls and three ground balls. Laura Gendreau was outstanding on defense forcing seven turnovers to go along with five ground balls. Jenna Bellano totaled five points on three goals and two assists.

Alex King, Marissa Yowell and Lauren Geary recorded four goals apiece for the visitors.

KSC struck first, just 56 seconds into the game on an unassisted goal by Jenna Bellano, but that was quickly answered by six goals from the Bears. During that span, Yowell got the Bears started, followed by three-straight from Geary and King added goals back-to-back for a 6-1 lead at the 15:09 mark.

Pressure by Bellano caused the BSU goalkeeper to turnover the clear attempt as the ball trickled in the back of the net for a 6-2 score.

Bridgewater scored the next two, which was answered by Polly Grey's back-to-back scores and another Robinson tally to see the Owls come within 8-5 with 6:02 on the clock.

The Bears scored three of the next four goals to take an 11-6 lead going into halftime.

Keene State came out of the half with a renewed sense of energy, scoring five-straight to tie the game 11-11, thanks to two goals apiece by Nolan and Robinson.

A three-goal spurt by the visitors game them a 14-11 lead, but the Owls would not go away as it was Nolan and Robinson again brining the home team to within one at 14-13.

King scored the game's final two goals for BSU and Bellano answered wih 2:17 remaining in the game, but the comeback would end with a 16-14 final decision.

The Owls held a slim 31-29 advantage in shots, while the Bears picked up 30 ground balls compared to 29 for KSC.

Alison Argiro made eight stops for KSC, while Allie Forman registered nine saves for the visitors.

The Owls return to conference play Saturday when they travel to Eastern Connecticut for an 11:00 a.m. tilt.
