Owls Pull Away from Western Connecticut to Advance to LEC Finals

Box Score

KEENE, N.H. - The Keene State College women's lacrosse team scored a season-high 24 goals in their 24-18 win over Western Connecticut State in the LEC semifinals Thursday afternoon at Owl Stadium.

The Owls (6-11) used a late run in the second half to advance to the tournament finals for the sixth time in program history. KSC won tournament titles in 2009, 2011, and 2012, and were runner-ups in 2004 and 2014.

Western Connecticut sees its season come to an end at 10-8.

The Owls were led by Kaitlin Nolan and Jenna Bellano who each recorded five goals, while freshman Taylor Farland came up big with four goals. Ten different players scored for the Owls, including two apiece from Tori Weinstock, Christa Demovellan and Polly Grey.

Leading the offensive effort for the Colonials was Destinee Carey with five goals, followed by Kelsey Heaton who had four goals and two assists. Olivia Kosilla also recorded four goals and added three ground balls.

The Owls struck first and claimed a 4-1 lead seven minutes into the game. Tara Kilderry opened up the scoring with her first goal of the season, but the Colonials tied it up with Kelsey Heaton's unassisted shot.

Kosilla started a Western run of four-straight goals at the 22:03 mark as the visitors claimed a 5-4 lead. Both teams exhanged the next goals followed by a Keene State run of four tallies as the Owls were able to take a 9-6 advantage with 4:12 on the clock.

Each team would score two more for an 11-8 halftime score.

The opening minutes of the second-half was a back-and-forth affair until Western Connecticut orchestrated a mini-run of three goals in 56 seconds to come within 14-13 with 17:59 on the clock.

Tied at 17-17 at the 12:13 mark, the Owls rattled off six-straight goals over seven minutes to put away any hopes of a Colonials comeback.

KSC will play Plymouth State in a rematch of the 2014 LEC title game on Saturday at a time to be announced.  The winner will receive the LEC's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
