Nazareth Holds Off Women's Lacrosse In Non-Conference Battle

ENGLEWOOD, Fla. - Led by four goals apiece from senior Taylor Farland and junior Chelsea Lewis, the Keene State women's lacrosse team battled to a 12-9 loss to Nazareth in a non-conference contest on Friday morning at the Ann Dever Regional Park.

How It Happened 

It was a back-and-forth affair across all 60 minutes, as the Golden Flyers knocked down the first goal with 24:36 to go, before the Owls rattled of three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead, as Farland got Keene State on the board with an unassisted tally, followed by a converted free position opportunity from senior Tori Weinstock, and a strike from Lewis to complete the three-goal run with 13: 41 left on the clock. Nazareth countered with back-to-back goals to push the score to an even three apiece, yet Keene State regained its two-point lead with two goals from Lewis with 4:57 remaining. The Golden Flyers rallied in the final minutes of the half to score three consecutive goals to take a 6-5 lead going into the break.   

Farland opened up the scoring in the second half to even the score at six, followed by a strike from Lewis to give the Owls a one-point advantage with 23:51 to go, yet Nazareth tied up the game at eight less than a minute later for the fourth and final time of the contest. Neither team would score over the next nine minutes until the Golden Flyers netted two quick goals to grab a 10-8 lead, before Farland made it a one-point game with a free position goal with 12:02 left in the stanza. The Owls would tally one more as Farland found the back of the net at the 5:50 mark, as Nazareth went on a 3-1 run to defeat Keene State in the remaining minutes, 12-9.

Inside the Crease 

  • For the Owls, Farland tallied a season-high four goals and added five ground balls, four draw controls and four caused turnovers. Lewis also recorded a season-high four goals and added two caused turnovers, while Weinstock registered six draw controls, three ground balls and one caused turnover. 
  • For the Golden Flyers, Jamie Martin scored four goals and recorded two assists, one draw control and one caused turnover, followed by Haley DeVona with three goals, two assists, two draw controls and two ground balls.
  • Between the pipes, senior Anna O'Brien made a career-high 10 saves in all 60 minutes of play, while Brianna Rizzari stopped eight shots. 
  • The two sides were even in the ground ball battle with each grabbing 20, while Keene State held a 13-10 advantage in draw controls over Nazareth.
