Records

  • Keene State: 2-3
  • Wheaton: 3-6

How It Happened

The first half was tightly contested as neither team was able to gather much breathing room. The first goal of the evening belonged to Wheaton, as Kyra Schwartzman finished a Lilly Callahan pass just over three minutes in. The Owls tied things up when Tess Masci took advantage of a free-position shot to beat Lyons netminder Jena Casman. Wheaton then started to take over, when Molly Covarrubias scored, followed by Schwartzman's second of the game. Ali Daisy then kept the free-position goals coming for KSC, as she found the back of the net to bring the score within one. The Lyons quickly responded with two more of their own, when Lilly Callahan scored followed by Covarrubias' second of the night. The Owls responded in timely manner, when Chelsea Lewis scored the third free-position goal of the game. Brigid Casey then scored an unassisted goal before Erica Chareth tied it up at five a piece off a Daisy pass. A minute later, Lilly Callahan regave the Lyons the lead as the visitors stormed back with three straight. Covarrubias added her third of the game and Danielle Trudeau scored at the 8:11 mark to give Wheaton a three goal cushion. Keene State kept on fighting back, as Casey added her second of the night before Ali Daisy scored with two seconds left in the half off a great pass from Chareth. The Owls 2-0 run brought them back within one, as the half ended 8-7 in favor of Wheaton.

The second half scoring started early and often, when Callahan continued her high scoring game for the Lyons. Brigid Casey responded 30 seconds later when she found the net off a Chelsea Lewis feed. Covarrubias then scored back-to-back goals to increase Wheaton's lead to 11-8. The next five minutes of action were goalless as the Owls tried to find their way back in the contest. Brigid Casey started the Owls huge 7-0 run, as she scored her fourth off an Ali Daisy feed. Chelsea Lewis then joined the fun off a Casey pass with 16:52 to go to bring KSC within one. The sensational freshman Casey then scored off a free-position shot to tie things up, before she added her sixth of the game unassisted, to give the Owls their first lead of the night at 12-11. Ali Daisy and Meghan Gorham both took advantage of man-up chances as they scored free-position shots to add to KSC's lead. Daisy then put the exclamation point on top for Keene State off a great look from Casey. The Lyons got one back when Casey Kaplan scored on a man-down opportunity but it was too little too late. KSC's dominant second half propelled them to a home opening 15-12 win over Wheaton.
