Women’s Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker in Overtime

Keene State ties the game late in the second half but unable to grab the last goal of the game as they suffer their 6th straight setback to rival Plymouth State.

Box Score

PLYMOUTH, N.H.- The Keene State women's lacrosse team scored to tie the game with 1:39 remaining in regulation but saw the Plymouth State University Panthers score the most important goal in overtime, dropping the Owls for just the first time in their last five games. Keene State's Brigid Casey came away with five goals and one assist on the afternoon. Plymouth State was led by Elizabeth McLoughlin, who scored five times for the Panthers and their goalkeeper Meaghan Allard, who made 16 saves on the Owls, preventing Keene State from taking a commanding lead at any point in the contest.

How it Happened
Just 52 seconds into the game, Keene State was awarded with a free position shot, looking to cash in on some early opportunity. Unfortunately for KSC, Meaghan Allard was up to the task to deny an early scoring chance. Plymouth State used Allard's early save as some momentum as PSU registered the first goal of the game when Sydney Dubois collected her 15th goal of the season. Dubois received a pass from Olivia Croke and took a shot right towards GK Haley Terva and gave the Panthers the 1-0 lead. Keene State would respond quickly, however, scoring two goals in 42 seconds to take the lead for the first time in the game. Sophomore Haile Ratajack got the scoring started for the Owls, taking a pass from Brooke Ellis right to goal, and cashing in, followed by a goal from senior Ali Daisy to give KSC the lead. Ratajack wouldn't be done there, as she would be the next one to score in the contest for the Owls as she netted her 32nd of the season to give the Owls the 3-1 lead. Keene State and Plymouth State would exchange the next two goals with Elizabeth McLoughlin scoring for PSU and Ali Daisy netting her second of the afternoon for Keene State.

Both teams saw some action on the offensive end towards the end of the first half as both Haley Terva and Meaghan Allard came up with saves to keep their teams alive in this Little East Conference showdown. With just under 13 minutes to play in the half, Keene State would take their largest lead of the game, leading by three goals off a goal by Brigid Casey, who slots home her 22nd of the season. PSU would fight back for the next two goals in the contest, cutting Keene State's lead to just one. PSU and KSC would go goal for goal to round off the final six minutes of the first half, with Keene State taking the two-goal advantage heading into the break by a score of 7-5.

Plymouth's Elizabeth McLoughlin opened the scoring just over two minutes into the second half, scoring her 19th of the season. KSC would once again respond with two goals to put themselves back up by three as Brigid Casey and Megan Gorham would find twine for the Owls in the span of one minutes and four seconds. As they did all afternoon long, the Panthers responded, this time with four straight goals to take the lead with 3:28 to go. While a player up, sophomore Sarah Schartner ripped a shot passed the Owls goalkeeper that gave PSU the 10-9 lead. Keene State did not go down however, having some heroics of their own in the last minute and a half to play in the game.

Keene State junior Brigid Casey went up the field and seized on an opportunity off a misplay by Plymouth State. Keene's Hannah Dworkin took a shot that was shut down by Meaghan Allard that rolled behind that goal that both Dworkin and Allard went to play. With Dworkin winning the ball, she passed to an open Brigid Casey who had an open cage and was able to cash in with 1:39 to go in the second half to tie the game. Plymouth State came away with one final chance with ten seconds to go in the contest, but GK Haley Terva shut down the Panthers scoring attempt to take the game into overtime. In the OT frame both teams took free position shots to end it, but it was Terva for Keene State and Allard for Plymouth State coming up with big saves. With 3:18 to play, the Panthers were awarded another free position goal, which was awarded to Sarah Schartner. Schartner was able to rip a shot up and over the outstretched stick of Haley Terva and into the net, giving Plymouth State the 11-10 victory. KSC falls for just the second time in conference play, and for the first time in five games overall.
