Women's Lacrosse Dropped By Western New England To Open 2022 Season

Casey Nets Four In Defeat

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Western New England University scored the first nine goals of the game and never looked back, handing Keene State College a 16-6 defeat in the season opener for both teams at Golden Bear Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

Records
  • Keene State: 0-1
  • Western New England: 1-0

How it Happened

The Golden Bears opened the scoring 58 seconds into the game, on an unassisted tally by Emmy Burns.   The lead ballooned to seven at the end of the first quarter, as Anabella Arias and Reilly Miller each scored twice, with additional goals from Kylie Buchanan and Hannah Jarvis.   The onslaught continued in the second quarter, as Jarvis and Arias scored before Keene State got on the board through the first of Brigid Casey's four goals in the game.

Western New England remained in control, scoring the next four, including a man-down goal by Buchanan.  Casey netted her second with 3:07 left in the half as the Owls went into the break down 13-2.

The Owls ouscored Western New England 3-2 in the third quarter, as Jackie DeAngelis, Casey, and Haile Ratajack, but could not get closer than nine the rest of the way.

Senior goalkeeper Haley Terva made 15 saves in her first start of the season.

Draw Controls
  • It was the first meeting between the schools for 20 years.  The Owls are just 1-5 all-time against Western New England and have not defeated the Golden Bears since March 26, 1998.
  • Casey inches closer to 100 goals for her career; despite missing the better part of one-and-a-half seasons, she now needs three more goals to reach the 100 goal mark.
