MANSFIELD, Conn. – First-place and No. 2 nationally-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University scored six times in the first inning and led 9-0 by the end of the third inning as they cruised to a 10-0, seven-inning win over the Keene State College baseball team in Little East Conference action Tuesday afternoon at the Mansfield Complex.
Records
- Keene State: 6-19, 2-6 LEC
- No. 2 Eastern Connecticut: 23-2, 10-0 LEC
How It Happened
The Owls left a runner in scoring position in the top of the first after
Nathaniel Hudson singled and moved to send on a ground out, and a sloppy bottom half of the inning that saw KSC make two errors helped the Warriors score six times as they ran out to a big early lead and never looked back. Three of the first six Eastern Connecticut hitters singled as the home team built a quick 3-0 lead, but Keene State then helped them add on three more after that as they hit a batter and committed an error that should have ended the inning (after an earlier miscue on Matt Malcom's fly ball to center). The misplay helped score two runs to make it 5-0, and Jason Claiborn's grounder to second added on another.
That alone was more than enough offense for two Eastern pitchers, which were never seriously threatened by KSC's offense. The Owls managed five singles and two walks while being shut out for the third consecutive game in Mansfield, all within the last 370 days.
Brendan Eaton finished 2-for-3 and is now six for his last 13 in a four-game hitting streak. Hudson,
Joe Barter (1-3), and
Junior Santos (1-3) also singled, but that was the extent of the Owl attack against Nolan Lincoln (2-0) and Jack Wallace. Lincoln went four innings and allowed three hits, walking one and striking out one. Wallace struck out five of the final three innings, allowing two hits and one walk.
ECSU added to their 6-0 lead on a John Mesagno homer in the second that made it 7-0 before Jack Rich went deep in the third to make it 8-0.
Keene State put the first two on in the fourth when Eaton singled and
Josh Beayon took ball four, but three consecutive ground balls quickly ended the inning. Another base hit for Eaton and an error by Eastern Connecticut put two on in the sixth with one out, but Wallace struck out Barter and Montembeault looking to keep the Owls at zero. KSC left two on base in the seventh, also, before the Warriors ended the game in the bottom half after Dean Slavin singled, moved to second on a two-out walk and scored on Claiborn's single to left.
Freshman
Phil Nichols (1-3) started and took the loss for KSC, allowing three earned runs and three hits in one inning. Fellow first year
Jack Lang pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit, but the Owls as a pitching staff did not record any strikeouts in the game.
Mesagno and Rich paced Eastern's offense by each going 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs batted in, and two runs scored as they outhit Keene State 11-5 and won their 11th straight.
