SPRINGFIELD, Mass. –
Brendan Eaton continued his tear at the plate, connecting on his fourth home run of the season (all since March 13) in a second consecutive four-hit effort, but the Keene State College baseball team dropped a 10-1 decision to Western New England University on Thursday afternoon at Trelease Park.
Records
- Keene State: 3-14
- Western New England: 10-8
How It Happened
The Owls generated an immediate threat, loading the bases with one out in the first on singles from
Wyatt Daft, Eaton, and
Joe Barter, but two foul outs ended the inning and the Golden Bears then built a 3-0 lead through two that wound up mostly continuing to grow over the remainder of the afternoon. KSC mounted a brief push in the third, as Eaton's long ball to left made 3-1 before Barter walked and
Michael Montembeault singled into left, but a line drive double play prevented the Owls from getting any closer.
Patrick McKeighan worked out of trouble in the bottom half of the inning and Keene State put two on with two out in the fourth after singles by
Josh Beayon and a second of the day by Daft. However, WNE starter Jacob Hobart stranded both and then two more in the fifth.

Now trailing 6-1 after an error and a two-run triple by Joe Webber that plated a pair of unearned runs in the fifth, KSC got a single to center by the sizzling Eaton and a walk by Barter to put the first two on, only to see two fly outs and a bouncer to short end the latest threat. That ended up marking the beginning of three different Western New England pitchers combining to send down nine Owls in a row before Montembeault was hit by a pitch to kick off the eighth. Still down by the same 6-1 score, KSC again put a pair of runners on in an inning as Santos worked a walk, but a 4-6-3 double play again kept them scoreless. A double, two hit batters, and an error in a five-batter span helped the Golden Bears tack on four runs in the eighth for the final margin. Keene State finished the day by leaving three more on base in the ninth, stranding 13 men overall and at least two in four different innings.
A double steal with runners on first and third in the opening frame provided WNE a 1-0 edge, which then grew to three in the next inning when Vincent Caccavale singled home two, neither of whom reached on a hit. The Owls hoped Eaton's homer that made it 3-1 might turn the tables, but instead, they left three on over the next two frames and watched Western New England go up 6-1 with a three-run fourth that required just one hit, a triple by Webber with two outs that scored two unearned runs.
Will Dolaher settled things down for Keene State by pitching 2.2 hitless innings with four strikeouts, but was matched by a Golden Bears' bullpen that walked three and allowed only one hit over the final four innings.
Keene State had nine hits, four of which came in a 4-for-5 effort from Eaton. Barter finished 1-for-2 and walked three times while the emerging Daft was 2-for-4 and also drew a free pass, reaching three times.
Alex Koletar (0-2) got the start on the mound for the Owls and lasted two innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits while walking two and hitting a batter. KSC plunked five batters in the game (and walked five), adding at least 10 extra baserunners to their ledger.
Webber doubled, tripled and had four RBI for WNE in a 2-for-5 showing, their lone multi-hit game of the day. The top six in the Golden Bears' order each had a hit and recorded all eight of WNE's runs batted in. Hobart improved to 2-1 after tossing five innings and allowing one run on eight hits with two walks and one strikeout.
