BLOOMFIELD, Conn. – Sophomore
Sean McCaffrey shot a team-best 85 (+13) and was 15th overall in a 40-person field as the Keene State College men's golf team finished sixth as a team at the fourth annual Warrior Invitational Wednesday at the Tumble Brook Country Club.
The Manchester, N.H. native was six over on the front nine and seven over on the back, notching pars on No. 2, No. 3, No. 5, No. 6, No. 10, No. 12, and No. 13 but was four-over on No. 4 and No. 17, double-bogeying both.
The other group of Owls followed close behind McCaffrey, with freshman Matt Bryant finishing with an 86 (+14) including a birdie on the Par 3 No. 13. He shot an impressive 41 (+5) on holes one through nine, but three double bogeys in the final five holes dragged down the total.
Cade Williams and
Sean Cullen each finished with 87s (+15) and
Colin O'Brien had an 88 (+16) to round out KSC's contingent. O'Brien shot an impressive 39 on the front nine, including a birdie on No. 2 and five pars, but was at least two over on four different holes on the back nine, including a seven on No. 18. The 39 was Keene State's lowest score in a nine-hole span on the day. On the front nine, the Owls shot an aggregate 206 (+26), but they worsened by 21 strokes on No. 10 through 18, lowering their rank as a team in the process behind second place Rhode Island College by 13 strokes, Western Connecticut State University by seven shots and two other teams by four.
Host Eastern Connecticut State University, coming off an LEC championship this past weekend, was the team champion at plus-30 (318), 14 better than RIC, and had the individual medalist Ashton Lewis who shot an even par on the day. The LEC champion recorded four birdies and had a 36 on both the front and back nine. Rhode Island College's Jasper Bruins Slot was the runner up six strokes back of Lewis.
"It was a tough course and some tough conditions for everybody," said KSC head coach Jeff Timmer. "We had a couple of bad holes, but otherwise we played pretty well. Matt (Bryant) played well, which is a good step forward for him in competition."
As a group, the Owls struggled on No. 14 (5, 5, 6, 6, 9), No. 16, and No. 17. Williams birdied No. 3 and two others had a par.
Keene State wraps up the fall portion of their schedule at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) championship on Saturday and Sunday (October 14-15) at The Captains Golf Course in Brewster, Mass. Tee times begin at 9:00 a.m.
