Owls Claim First New England Sweep With Takedown of Fitchburg State

KEENE, N.H.—Freshman Megan Strzegowski scattered five hits over 8.2 innings of work between two games as the Keene State College softball team swept a doubleheader from Fitchburg State University 5-2 and 11-6 at Owl Athletic Complex on Thursday afternoon.

Records

  • Keene State: 8-30
  • Fitchburg State: 11-23

How it Happened

Strzegowski made just her second start of the season and allowed two hits and one unearned run to lead the Owls.  Keene State jumped on the Falcons early, scoring three runs in the first on an RBI single by Liv Whittier and a 2-RBI double by Grace Wallace.

Keene State increased the lead to 4-0 with Molly Murray's double to left in the bottom of the third, and added another run in the fourth when Strzegowski was hit by a pitch, moved to second on an errant pitch, and scored on Kalle Halvorsen's single to center.

Strzegowski, meanwhile, kept the Falcons off the scoreboard with help from her defense, getting inning ending double plays to end the second and third innings.

Lilah Demmy came on in relief and induced a game ending lineout to shut down a Fitchburg rally that had put runners on second and third in the top of the seventh.    Keene State mashed five extra base hits in game one, including four doubles.

After the Falcons had taken a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game two, the Owls pulled back two on an RBI triple from Liv Whittier and a groundout from Wallace.  The Owls then exploded for seven runs in the third inning, getting three consecutive triples from Emma Chenette (bases clearing), as well as Picard and Whittier, to open up a 9-3 lead.

Keene State never relinquished the lead, and Strzegowski, who had come on in relief of Chenette, allowed just three hits in 3.2 innings to earn her second win of the day.   Demmy also came on in relief for the final out.

Whittier finished game two 4-for-4 with two triples and two RBI, and scored twice.
