Owls Return North, Engineer Comeback to Sweep Smith

KSC Improves to 8-4 with 6-0, 5-3 Wins on Road

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Lilah Demmy and Carissa Miller combined for a shutout in the opener and the Keene State College softball team put an exclamation on the day by erasing a two-run deficit with a four-run seventh in the nightcap as they swept Smith College 6-0 and 5-3 on Friday afternoon on the road.

The Owls (8-4) were in complete command in the first game, outhitting the Pioneers (3-9) 13-4.  They broke the scoring ice with a three-run top of the fourth that began with a single up the middle for Kalle Halvorsen before she scored in Liv Whittier's RBI base hit two batters later.  Miller and Morgan Rodrigues added run-scoring hits later as KSC finished with five hits in the inning.

That would prove to be more than enough for Demmy (2-2) and Miller in the circle, with the pair teaming up to strike out eight in the four-hitter.  Demmy had five whiffs in five innings while allowing just four hits and a walk, while Miller tossed two hitless innings to preserve the shutout, walking one and fanning three.

The Owls piled on three more runs in the fifth and sixth – scoring in three consecutive innings overall – to add to their lead.  In the fifth, Halvorsen again sparked a run with a one-out single before scoring on an error on Liv Whittier's fly ball to right.  Miller's base hit and a walk by Abbie Monkevicz set the table for a productive sixth, and KSC cashed in, going up 5-0 on Rodrigues' infield single to third that was thrown away by Kat Wajerski to allow an extra base.  Demmy added on a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0.

Emilie Doty (1-5) pitched all seven innings for Smith, allowing 13 hits and six runs with one walk and five strikeouts.

Halvorsen, Whittier, and Miller went a combined 9-for-12 at the plate and all had three-hit games.
