How it Happened
Eastern Connecticut jumped out to a dominant lead after the first quarter of action as the Warriors outscored KSC 6-1 after the opening 15 minutes of action. Each team tallied a goal over the opening 3:05 of the contest with Alexa Vizzini scoring her first of the game for the Warriors and
Lola Smith scoring for KSC to tie the game up at one apiece. Despite the Owls' goalkeeper
Mabelle Bessette making five saves the rest of the quarter for KSC, including one free position save, ECSU tacked on five more goals in the quarter, including a man-down goal, to take a 6-1 lead into the second quarter.
The Warriors continued to apply the pressure after killing off their three cards over the first couple of minutes of the second quarter as they outscored KSC 3-1 over the second quarter. ECSU scored first in the second and after Bessette saved a free position shot again,
Anna Maccarini capitalized on her man-up goal for KSC with a goal to bring the score to 7-2 with 10:53 remaining in the quarter. The rest of the quarter, the Warriors scored two more goals as KSC was unable to even record a shot on goal as ECSU took a 9-2 lead into the second half.
Both teams combined for six shots on goal in the third quarter as none were saved and both teams scored three goals apiece over the 15 minutes of action. KSC looked to gain some momentum by making a goalie change by entering
Katelyn Nicotera at goalie for the second half. 1:46 into the quarter the Warriors scored their first goal of the quarter as Hannah Seltzer scored a man-up goal to increase the lead to eight.
Tess Brown answered back with a free position goal for KSC shortly after, but ECSU responded a minute later with a goal as ECSU went back up by eight. The Owls tried to mount a comeback as they scored two goals over the next 40 seconds with
Amethyst Phelps assisting Maccarini for the first of the two and
Lola Smith scoring the second to pull within six with 8:42 in the third. Unfortunately for KSC, the Warriors halted the Owls' momentum with another goal to take a 12-5 lead into the final 15 minutes of regulation of one of the teams' seasons on the year.
After ECSU got a card near the end of the fourth quarter, Brown scored another free position goal, this time a man-up goal, to pull within six for the Owls. The Warriors responded with a man-up free position goal themselves shortly after Abby Parisi scored with 12:09 remaining in the contest to jump back ahead by seven. Maccarini scored two more goals over the next few minutes for the Owls as both Lolas picked up an assist, coming from
Lola Varricchione and
Lola Smith on each of the goals to pull within five as the Owls looked to gain more momentum. Once again, the Warriors completely killed the Owls' momentum as Avonlea Lebeau scored a man-up free position goal for ECSU with 4:28 remaining. Brown tacked on another man-up free position goal shortly after for KSC, followed by Lebeau scoring another man-up goal for ECSU and the Warriors cruised to the 15-9 victory over KSC on the night.
