KEENE, N.H. – The Keene State College athletic department named
Tyler Bolaske of the men's indoor track and field team and
Molly Lu McKellar of the women's indoor track and field team this week's Owl Athletes of the Week. This week's selection encompassed action from March 9 through March 15.
Tyler Bolaske, a junior from Palmer, Massachusetts, competed in his second NCAA Division III national championship meet this year after competing in the cross country championships in the fall, as he followed it up by becoming a Second Team All-American in the men's mile this weekend. In the preliminary race on Friday for Bolaske, he got tripped up halfway through the event, falling back to last place of the 10 runners in his heat, even being off the screen of the live video of the event for a short period of time. Bolaske pushed through and ran a final lap of 27.99, 1.19 faster than the second-fastest final lap among all 20 runners in the event, to finish in 4:13.00. His time placed him fourth in his heat, guaranteeing him another race on Saturday, where he would be an All-American no matter the outcome. On Saturday, Bolaske finished 10th, as the junior took home Second Team All-American honors, making the trip successful for KSC, with both athletes becoming All-Americans.
Molly Lu McKellar, a senior from Hebron, New Hampshire, set a pair of school records last week on her way to becoming a Second Team All-American in the pentathlon. McKellar had had her eyes on the pentathlon school records and she was finally able to achieve it in her last indoor collegiate meet on the national stage as she broke former KSC individual national champion Janel Haggerty's mark of 3,467 in 2013 with a score of 3,482 at the NCAA Division III national championships this weekend. McKellar started off the day hot by setting her first program record of the day with a time of 8.93 in the 60m hurdles, placing sixth in the event for 925 points. Following a height of 1.52m in the high jump for 644 points, McKellar followed it up with 640 points from her second-place finish in the shot put with a distance of 11.68m. McKellar rounded out the day with a 4.99m mark in the long jump for 557 points, and needing to beat her previous best mark of 2:30.37 in the 800m to come close to the school record for the pentathlon, she did just that, setting a new collegiate-best mark of 2:28.14 for 716 points and to take home 13th in the pentathlon for Second Team All-American honors.
