GORHAM, ME - The University of Southern ME Huskies scored twice
in the final ten minutes and sophomore goalie Jessie Superchi
(Campton, N.H.) had eight saves as the University of Southern ME
Huskies shut out the Keene State College Owls, 2-0, in a Little
East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at Paula D.
Hodgdon Field.
The win was the Huskies first against the Owls since 1996,
snapping a six-game losing streak to the Owls. Southern ME improved
to 7-5 overall and 5-1 in the Little East. Keene State slips to 6-7
overall and 4-2 in the conference.
After more than 60 scoreless minutes, the Huskies finally got on
the board when junior forward Renee Heath (Brunswick, ME) knocked
in a rebound over the prone Keene State goalie, senior Lindsay
Hamilton (Brattleboro, Vt.), with 9:12 left in regulation. Hamilton
had stopped the initial drive by USM senior forward Liza Barker
(Greene, ME), but could not control the rebound.
The Huskies got an insurance goal with 5:53 to play when
freshman Sarah MacKay (Sanford, ME) took a pass from senior Aimee
Sharrow (Framingham, MA.) and beat Hamilton with a shot inside the
left post from the right side.
Superchi was outstanding for the Huskies. She kept the game
scoreless early in the second half as the Owls pressed the attack.
Her best save came when she stopped sophomore Tanya Strong's
(Hatfield, MA.) high drive ten minutes into the second half. The
shutout was Superchi's third of the season.
Hamilton finished the game with three saves for Keene State. The
Owls had an 11-9 edge in shots and a 12-7 margin in penalty
corners.
Southern ME returns to action Monday when it travels to
Bridgewater State College for another important Little East game.
Keene State hosts LEC rival Salem State College, also on Monday.
