'KEENE N.H. 10/2/02 - Junior Kate Barnowski's (Granville,
MA.) goal on a penalty stroke following double-overtime gave Keene
State College a 2-1 upset victory over Middlebury College in a
non-conference field hockey game played in Keene on Wednesday.
With the score knotted at 1-1 after two overtime periods, KSC
edged Middlebury 3-2 in strokes to gain the victory.
"I was a nervous wreck, but I do better under pressure, " said
Barnowski. "I always try to go to the top left. If I
get it high enough, the goalies not going to get it."
Nichole Dallas (Marlow, NH) and Kaitlyn Henley (Somers, NY) also
tallied penalty stroke goals for KSC. Char Glessner (Ipswich,
MA.) and Channing Weymouth (Plymouth, NH) scored stroke goals for
the Panthers.
Amy Carroll (Brunswick, ME) had an outstanding game in goal for
the Owls. The senior finished with 21 saves including two key stops
on Panther strokes. "It was a guessing game, and I just
guessed right," said Carroll about her strategy. "But I
couldn't have done it without the team."
Glessner gave Middlebury a 1-0 first half lead when she scored
on a rebound. KSC got the equalizer 11 minutes into the
second half when Sue Kohler (Southbury) finished off a corner play.
Jo Opot finished with nine saves for Middlebury (4-3), which
came into the game ranked 19th in the NFHCA Poll.
Keene State (6-4) snapped a two game losing streak with the win.
The Owls host Eastern CT in a homecoming game on Saturday (1:30
p.m.).
