'KEENE, N.H. 12/12/02 – Hayley Alaimo
(Ellington, CT) had 22 points including five three-pointers to lead
the Keene State College women's basketball team to a 93-81 victory
over Roger Williams University in a non-conference game played
Thursday at Spaulding Gym.
The victory snapped KSC's (5-3) two game losing streak while RWU
falls to 2-3.
Julie Tardif (Atkinson, N.H.) and Cathy Mechare (Falls Village,
CT) each finished with 16 points, Andrea Arsenault (Dover, N.H.)
added 15 points and Stacey Morse (Lebanon, N.H.), who hit all five
of her attempts from the field, finished with 12 points for KSC.
Leading by 11 points (37-26) on a three-pointer by Alaimo at the
3:29 mark of the first half, the Owls had to settle for a slim
37-35 advantage at the break.
The Hawks pulled ahead in the second half behind the three-point
shooting of Kristin Gaynor (Halifax, MA.) who hit five treys in the
period.
Trailing by five points (58-53) with 9:47 to play, KSC tied the
game at 62 all and went up 69-62 on a lay-up and free throw by
Alaimo at the 5:16 mark.
Roger Williams attempted to close the gap in the final minutes
by hitting several three-pointers, but the Owls hit their free
throws with Courtney Clarke (Trenton, N.J.) and Mechare going a
combined 14-for-18 from the line down the stretch.
"We survived this game," said KSC Coach Keith Boucher. "To
their credit they played hard for 40 minutes. We've had
spurts of playing well, including the last eight or nine minutes of
the game, but we haven't put together 40 minutes yet."
Gaynor had 21 points, Emily Rosenau (Marlboro, MA.) finished
with 18 points and Ashlee Vose (Columbia, CT) added 10 points and a
game-high 11 rebounds to lead the Hawks.
RWU hit 11 of 21 from behind the arc while KSC netted nine of 33
three-point attempts.
KSC returns to LEC play on Saturday when it travels to Southern
ME (1 p.m.) The Owls have not defeated USM since joining the LEC in
1997-98.
