'FT. MYERS, FLA. 3/19/02 - Keene State College bats' came alive
on Tuesday as the Owls defeated SUNY-Brockport 10-1 and Trinity
(Conn,) College 12-2 in softball games played in Fort Myers, Fla.
The two wins improved KSC's Spring Week record to 5-1.
Leading 3-1 after five innings against SUNY Brockport, the Owls
broke the game open with a seven-run seventh inning. The
uprising included RBI singles by Kerry Marsh (Plainfield, NH) and
Jennifer Mullen (Hooksett, NH) and a bases clearing double by Jan
Rissacher (Voorheesville, N.Y)
Mullen went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs.
Katie Thompson (Stratham, N.H) got the complete game win on the
mound. The junior scattered seven hits with seven strikeouts
and one walk to notch her second win of the season.
"It was an important regional win," said KSC Coach Charlie
Beach.
The Owls banged out 13 hits in their win over Trinity later in
the day.
KSC put the game away early with an eight run first
inning. The Owls had five hits in the inning including a
two-run double by Nikki Foote (Hudson, NH). The Bantams, who had
just 10 players dressed in the game due to illness, didn't help
themselves by committing three errors.
Marsh went 3-for-3 at the plate while Rissacher, Abby Collis
(Wynantskill, N.Y.), and Foote each had two hits in the game.
Two freshmen handled the pitching for the Owls. Jennifer
Smith (Salem, NH) tossed the first three innings to get the win.
Meghan McLoughlin (Brattleboro, Vt.) gave up just three hits in her
three innings of work.
"It was nice to get the bat going," said Beach. "We got a
contribution from everyone in the line-up."
The Owls will take Wednesday off before returning to the field
on Thursday when they face Suffolk University and Cazenovia (NY)
College.
