'Owls Softball Team Splits Pair In Florida

FT. MYERS, FLA. 3/22/02 - The Keene State College softball team extended its winning streak to six game with a 5-1 victory over Grinnell (IA) College and were shutout 2-0 by Wisconsin Oshkosh in its second game on Friday in Ft. Myers, Florida.

Katie Thompson (Stratham, N.H) pitched a complete game four hitter to lead KSC over Grinnell.  The junior struck out two and didn't give up a walk to improve to 3-0 this spring.

Keene State also had some timely hitting in the game.
Caroline Kurkowski (Niskayuna, N.Y.) had a RBI single to give the Owls a 2-0 lead in the third and Adria Reynolds (Portsmouth, NH) delivered a run-producing double in the fourth.  KSC added two more runs in the seventh that featured a suicide squeeze play by Melissa Provost (Ludlow, MA.) that plated Jennifer Norman (Penacook, N.H.).

Norman, Kurkowski and Reynolds all had two hits in the game.

"Katie pitched very well and we took advantage of our opportunities," said KSC Coach Charlie Beach.  "It was a hard fought game against a tough team."

The Owls saw their winning streak come to an end with the loss to Wisconsin Oshkosh.  "We got runners on base and hit some very hard balls at them," said Beach. "But give them credit, they made all the plays.  KSC had six hits in the game including two each from Nikki Foote (Hudson, NH) and Jan Rissacher (Voorheesville, NY).


Pitcher Meghan McLoughlin (Brattleboro, Vt.) was the hard-luck loser for KSC.  The freshman gave up both runs in her four innings on the mound.  She had three strikeouts and one walk.

Wisconsin-Oshkosh scored single runs in the second and in the fifth innings.

Keene State (8-2) wraps up it Spring Week trip against Oneonta State on Saturday.  KSC has faced Oneonta four times. The Owls only win was in an opening round NCAA Tournament game in 1999.  "We have a history against them," said Beach, who will send Missy Zimmerman to the mound.
