KEENE, NH  4/14/02 - The Keene State College softball team lost 3-2 in a 14 inning opener to Western CT and played to a 2-2 stalemate in the second game called after nine innings due to darkness in a marathon Little East doubleheader played Sunday in Keene.

Katie Wardlow (Old Bridge, NJ) doubled home Cathleen Knapp (Monroe, CT) with the winning run in the top of the 14th inning for WCSU in the first game.  Sarah Zaslaw   (10-1) (Stoughton, MA.) went the distance for the Colonials giving up seven hits and striking out 18 Owl batters.

Trailing 1-0 with two out in the bottom of the seventh, KSC's Nicole Foote (Hudson, NH) sent the game into extra innings with her first home run of the season. Western CT went up 2-1 in the 11th when Melissa Walsh (Milford, CT) scored on a throwing error. But the Owls came back to tie the game again in the bottom of the inning on an RBII double by Caroline Kurkowski (Niskayuna, NY).

Jan Rissacher (Vorheesville, NY) had three hits for KSC.  Melissa Zimmerman,  (3-3) (Leyden, MA.) who scattered eight hits and allowed just one earn run in her 14 innings on the mound, took the loss for the Owls.

Kurkowski's line drive home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the fourth, her second round-tripper of the season, gave KSC a 1-0 lead in the second game.  It would stay that way until the top of the seventh when the Colonials went ahead 2-1 on a two run triple by Cherie Bailey (Middletown, CT).

KSC tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI single from Shauna Mullen (Hooksett, NH).

Katie Thompson (Stratham, NH), who pitched into the seventh inning for the Owls, gave up five hits, struck out six and walked two. Meghan McLoughlin (Brattleboro, VT) didn't allow a hit in her 1.2 innings of work. She entered the game in the seventh and got a key double play to end a WCSU rally.

Kathryn Helbig (New Milford, CT) started for the Colonials before giving way to Brooke Morris (Stamford, CT) in the fifth inning. Zaslaw came into pitch in the seventh getting six more strikeouts.

KSC is now 13-6-2 (1-2-1 LEC) while WCSU goes to 15-4-1 (4-0-1 LEC).
