Owl Softball Team Splits With Eastern CT

KEENE, N.H.. 4/21/02 - Keene State College split a Little East Conference softball doubleheader against Eastern Connecticut State University in Keene on Sunday.



 

Home runs by Melissa Provost (Ludlow, MA.), Jan Rissacher (Vorheesville, N.Y.) and Caroline Kurkowski (Niskayuna, N.Y.) powered KSC to a 5-3 win in the opener.



 Shari D'Amico (Trumbull, CT) won a pitchers duel with Katie Thompson (Stratham, N.H.) as Eastern CT edged the Owls 2-1 in the nightcap.





KSC goes to 16-9-2 (4-5-1 LEC) while ECSU is 16-16 (5-5 LEC).





Trailing 2-0 going into the bottom of the second inning of the first game, KSC got one run back on Provost's second home run of the season.  KSC added three more runs in the third on a leadoff blast by Rissacher (her second of the year) and a two-run shot by Kurkowski (her third of the year). KSC added an important insurance run in the sixth when Stacey Parr scored on a fielders' choice.





Adria Reynolds (Portmouth, NH) and Provost had two hits each for KSC while D'Amico had three hits for the Warriors.

Melissa Zimmerman (5-4), who scattered 10 hits and struck out two, got the complete game win for the Owls.  Jennifer Ross (Canterbury, CT) (7-11) took the loss for ECSU,

Eastern CT won the second game behind D'Amico who tossed a complete game four-hitter.  Thompson had a strong outing for the Owls giving up five hits and striking out six batters.





KSC took a 1-0 in the bottom of the second on Reynolds second home run of the season.  Eastern CT scored both of its runs in the top of the third on RBI hits from D'Amico and Jennifer Ross.





The Owls had several opportunities to tie the score, including the bottom of the seventh, when Provost was stranded at second base.





KSC will be at UMA-Boston on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.)
