Owls Fall To So. ME In LEC Tourney 6-1

KEENE, N.H. 5/1/02 - Keene State College lost to the University of Southern ME 6-1 in a Little East Conference softball quarterfinal play-in game in Keene on Wednesday.

The loss eliminates the Owls (21-11-2) from this weekend's four team LEC tournament that takes place at top seed Western Connecticut State University. It is the first time KSC has failed to advance since joining the LEC in 1998.

The third seeded Owls, which swept a doubleheader against USM on Saturday, fell behind early and never recovered.  The Huskies scored two runs on three hits off of KSC starter Katie Thompson (Stratham, N.H.) in the first inning and added two more runs in the second.  A two-run double by Sarah McLean that followed a throwing error by shortstop Shauna Mullen (Hooksett, N.H.) proved costly to the Owls.

Missy Zimmerman (Leyden, MA.) relieved Thompson in the second and gave up one run- a homer by McLean the rest of the way. Thompson record goes to 8-4.

Southern ME pitcher Melissa Henderson, a freshman, retired the first nine batters and struck out ten.

KSC's best opportunity to get back in the game came in the fourth, when Jan Rissacher (Voorheesville, N.Y.) singled and Adria Reynolds (Portsmouth, N.H.) doubled with one out.  But Henderson struck out Caroline Kurkowski (Niskayuna, N.Y.) and Mullen to end the threat.

Nikki Foote (Hudson, N.H.) accounted for the Owl's only run with a solo home run in the sixth inning. KSC had four hits in the game, including two by Reynolds.
