'KEENE, N.H. 2/25/03 – The
fourth-seeded Keene State College women's basketball team outscored
fifth-seeded UMA-Boston 16-4 in overtime to post a come-from-behind
94-82 victory in a Little East Conference quarterfinal game played
Tuesday in Keene.
With the victory, Keene State 16-10 advances to the semifinal
round where they will face top seed and host Southern ME in a 8
p.m. game on Friday. USM (23-3) moved on with a 92-26 win
over eighth seed R.I. College. UMA-Boston record goes to
13-12.
Hayley Alaimo (Ellington, CT) three-point shot got KSC to within
two 78-76 with nine seconds to play. After Felicia Haynes
(Hyde Park, MA.) missed two free throw attempts, KSC's Andrea
Arsenault (Dover, N.H.) hit a pair of free throws with 4.3 seconds
to play that knotted the score at 78-all. UMB had a chance to win
the game in regulation, but Indya Mitchell's shot at the buzzer was
off the mark.
Arsenault, who finished with 22 points, scored five points in
the overtime period to help lead the Owls to the victory.
"We gave ourselves an opportunity to win the game and in
overtime I thought we just executed very well," said KSC Coach
Keith Boucher. "They gave us an opening and we took advantage
of it."
Alaimo had 24 points and 13 rebounds and Julie Tardif (Atkinson,
N.H.) finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds for KSC.
Returning to the line-up after suffering an ankle injury, Cathy
Mechare (Falls Village, CT) seven points and six assists.
Jamila Gales (Boston, MA.), who scored her 1,000th career point
late in the first half, had a game high 33 points and 16 rebounds
and Andreen Gilpin (Boston, MA.) finished with 24 points and 16
rebounds to lead the Beacons.
