'FORT MYERS. FLA. 3/16/03 – The Keene State
College softball team begin its Spring Week trip in Fort Myers,
Fla., with a pair of wins on Sunday. The Owls blanked
Framingham State 10-0 and then came back to defeat Lasell College
of Newton, MA., 14-6 in the nightcap.
Sophomore Stephanie Carter (Cohoes, N.Y.) tossed one-hitter and
had four strikeouts in four innings of work to get the win in the
opener. Jennifer Smith (Salem, N.H.) pitched a scoreless
fifth inning.
Scoreless through three innings, the Owls broke the game open
with a 10-run fourth inning. The inning featured three home
runs, a solo shot by Adria Reynolds (Portsmouth, N.H.), a two-run
blast by Shauna Mullen (Hooksett, N.H.), and a grand slam by
Jennifer Norman (Penacook, N.H.). Freshman Abby Blanchette
(Webster, N.H.) also had an RBI single in the frame.
Reynolds, Mullen, and Blanchette all went two for three in the
game.
Called " a strange game with many unusual plays, by KSC coach
Charlie Beach, the Owls overcame a 6-5 deficit to win the second
game.
Trailing 6-5 in the top of the third, KSC pulled ahead with five
runs. "There wasn't a big hit," Beach said. "They're
were a lot of misplayed balls and we just chipped away."
KSC added three more runs in the fifth and a single run in the
sixth.
Reynolds had a big game at the plate going two-for-four with
four RBIs. Jan Rissacher (Voorheesville, N.Y.) and Norman
also had a pair of hits each. Mullen had a two-run double in
the first inning.
Starter Meghan McLoughlin (Brattleboro, Vt.) went three innings
to pick up the win. Katie Thompson (Stratham, N.H.) tossed
three strong innings in relief to notch the save.
"Hopefully we got a bad game out of our system, said
Beach. "We have a couple of tough games against Pine Manor
College and Smith College ion Monday. "
