'FORT MYERS, FLA. 3/20/03 – The Keene State College
softball team split its two games in Florida on Thursday.
After edging Oneonta State 5-4 in their opener , the Owls
suffered a 6-1 loss to Wheaton College in their second game.
Keene State took a 2-0 lead against Oneonta. Sauna Mullen
(Hooksett, N.H.) led off the second inning with a home run, her
second of the week, and Jennifer Norman (Penacook, N.H.) had an RBI
single in the third.
After Oneonta took a 3-2 lead in the sixth, KSC went ahead for
good in the seventh when they plated three runs on a couple of
Oneonta errors and a run-producing single by Mullen.
Mullen went three-for four while Abby Blanchette (Webster, N.H.)
and Caroline Kurkowski (Niskayuna, N.Y) had two hits each.
Katie Thompson (Stratham, N.H.) started for KSC. Stephanie
Carter (Cohoes, N.Y.), who pitched the last two innings picked up
the pitching victory.
With the game knotted 1-1, Wheaton College scored three runs in
the third inning on the way to defeating Keene State later in the
day.
"We didn't play sound softball," said KSC Coach Charlie Beach.
The Owls had just two hits in the game, singles by Amanda Foote
(Hudson, N.H.) and Mullen.
Missy Zimmerman (Leyden, MA.), who had a tough outing on the
mound took the loss. Meghan McLoughlin (Brattleboro, Vt.) tossed
the final inning.
On Friday, Keene State (6-2) will face Roger Williams University
(9 a.m.) and New England College (11 a.m.).
