'SPRINGFIELD, MA., March 27, 2003 – The Keene State
College softball team opened up its north schedule by splitting a
doubleheader against Springfield College on Thursday.
Keene State (10-3) took the opening game thanks in part to
junior second baseman Kerry Marsh, who capped a seven-run eighth
inning with a three-run home run to give the Owls a 10-3 win in
eight innings.
Springfield College's Ali Gerrish went 3-for-4 with three RBI to
lead the Pride to a 9-1 victory in the second game.
SC (7-5) opened the scoring early in the second game when
sophomore right fielder Laurie Cersosimo (W. Hartford, CT) drove in
senior centerfielder Jill Roach (S. Hadley, MA.) to give the Pride
a 1-0 lead. Springfield then broke the game open with a five-run
third inning that featured a two-run double from senior second
baseman Nicole Coromato (Utica, N.Y.). The game was called during
the bottom of the sixth inning due to darkness.
In the opening game, SC got on the board first when senior
pitcher Brianne Pearson (Brockton, MA.) scored on a Keene State
error to make the score 1-0 in the fifth. The Owls answered in the
sixth inning when junior designated player Caroline Kurkowski
smashed a three-run homer. Pearson tied the game in the bottom of
the inning when she blasted her own two-run home run over the left
field fence.
