'KEENE, N.H. 4/18/02 – Rhode Island
College swept a Little East Conference softball doubleheader
against host Keene State on Thursday. RIC took game one 3-0, and
then won game two 7-2.
With the sweep, Rhode Island improves to 16-8-1 (5-1 LEC) while
Keene State drops to 13-10 (3-5 LEC).
Kim Warrington (North Kingstown, R.I.) pitched a complete game
two-hitter in the opener with six strikeouts.
KSC hits came from Caroline Kurkowski (Niskayuna, N.Y.), who
doubled in the fourth and Tiffany Underhill (Eastham, MA.) who had
a pinch-hit single in the seventh.
RIC scored two runs in the top of the fourth on a RBI single by
Sue Gaber (Colchester, CT) and a KSC error. Rachel Caldwell
(Richmond, RI) added an RBI hit in the sixth.
Casey Soars (Swansea, MA.) had three hits in the game for RIC.
Stephanie Carter (Cohoes, N.Y.) took the loss for KSC. She is
now 5-2.
Trailing 3-0 in the second game, the Owls got two runs back in
the fourth on Abby Blanchette's (Webster, NH) second home run of
the season and a sacrifice fly by Kerry Marsh (Meriden, N.H.).
Blanchette went two-for three at the plate.
RIC broke the game open with Warrington's bases-clearing triple
in the sixth inning. Caldwell led the Anchorwomen with three hits
in the game.
Warrington in relief of starter Casey Soares, also notched the
pitching victory in the second game to improve her record to 12-5.
Missy Zimmerman (Leyden, MA.) (2-5) took the loss for KSC.
Keene State's doubleheader against UMA-Dartmouth on Saturday has
been cancelled. The Corsairs have forfeited the games due to lack
of players.
