'KEENE, N.H. . 4/24/02 – Caroline
Kurkowski (Niskayuna, N.Y.) had two home runs and seven RBIs to
lead the Keene State College softball team to a non-conference
doubleheader sweep against Fitchburg State on Thursday.
Keene State (17-10) exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning
to win the opener 11-2. The Owls posted a 6-5
come-from-behind victory in the nightcap.
In the first game, KSC took the lead (4-2) in the bottom of the
fourth on Nikki Foote's (Hudson, N.H.) two run home run. Her
first round-tripper of the season.
KSC's seven run sixth inning included a grand slam home run by
Kurkowski and a two run blast by Tiffany Underhill (Eastham,
MA.) Shauna Mullen (Hooksett, N.H.) had three hits and three RBIs
in the game.
Meghan McLoughlin (Brattleboro, Vt.) (3-1) got the complete game
victory for the Owls.
Kristen Bourgalt (Fitchburg MA) had a two run double for FSC.
Trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning of the second
game, KSC tied the score on a three-run home run by
Kurkowski. Abby Blanchette (Webster, N.H.), who opened the
bottom of the sixth with a double, scored the go-ahead run when she
was sacrificed to third and scored on an error. Blanchette went
three-for-three in the game.
Missy Zimmerman (Leyden, MA.)(4-5), in relief of starter
Stephanie Carter (Cohoes, N.Y.) got credit for the win.
Alyssa Freda (Leominster, MA.), Lacy Gillottti, and Bourgalt had
two hits each for the Falcons (12-12). Kristen Bissonette (So, New
Salem, MA.) took the loss for Fitchburg.
KSC host UMA-Boston in a LEC twinbill on Friday (1:30 p.m.).
